for volunteer-led instruction
A lack of skills and knowledge shouldn’t be a barrier to outdoor recreation.
Mountain Education Alliance (MEA) provides a unified set of safety standards and consistent training for climbing and outdoor organizations around the country.
MEA was founded by the American Alpine Club, Appalachian Mountain Club, Colorado Mountain Club, Mazamas, and The Mountaineers.
Mountain LEAD (Leadership Education and Development) certifications are based on the rigorous standards of the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA).
Mountain LEAD standards emphasize technical proficiency, leadership, personal safety and inclusion.
Mountain LEAD makes it easier for outdoor organizations to train and mentor volunteer educators to a consistent, unified standard that promotes a safe, inclusive and responsible outdoor experience.
MEA standards ensure outdoor students have access to a consistent, safe experience, no matter where they are, no matter what their local affiliation.
Our partner organizations are the core of our programs. Want to know more about MEA and its partner organizations?
