Mountain LEAD is a set of national climbing and mountaineering standards designed to improve the quality and consistency of volunteer-based climbing education throughout the United States.
The qualifications, known as Mountain LEAD (Leadership Education and Development) certificates, focus on leadership and education, and are designed to recognize the most skilled volunteer leaders and educators.
Mountain LEAD standards were developed in consultation with the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA) and adhere to the most rigorous safety standards. Mountain LEAD certification also establishes best practices for leadership development, inclusion, and personal safety.
The Traditional Climbing certificate covers single-pitch traditional climbs on a variety of rock types . Traditional climbs are those that require the placement of removable protection or those with insufficient protection to prevent serious falls. Single-pitch climbs are those climbed without intermediate belays.
The Sport Climbing certificate covers single-pitch sport climbs on a variety of rock types and artificial structures. Sport climbs are defined by a manageable hazard of ground or ledge fall, modern bolts and bolted anchors, and are reasonably clear of loose rock. Single-pitch climbs are those climbed without intermediate belays.
Top Rope Educators operate on top access, single-pitch climbs on a variety of rock types and artificial structures that do not involve lead climbing or top-site management. Climbs with non-technical access to the area above the climb are considered top access, but may require systems to manage risks associated with exposure or other hazards.
Winter Mountain Educator endorsement covers non-technical terrain in summer conditions as well as in sub-freezing, or snowy conditions, including avalanche terrain. Travel encompasses everything from casual on-trail walking and hiking to non-technical off-trail scrambling where hands are used to maintain balance and stability. Terrain may be loose and/or exposed, and sustained strenuous up- and downhill travel are common.
